Living Frugally...

Saving money and living frugally may be easier than you think

To reduce your utility payments and keep your home more comfortable, consider Interior Storm Windows from Super Saver Windows.  They really make a huge difference in comfort by cutting drafts and sealing up your existing windows or other openings.  And they are very affordable at only a fraction the cost of replacing your windows.

OTHER WAYS TO SAVE:

Encourage everyone in the family to have thrifty habits, budgeting income and expenses and putting aside some funds for a "rainy day."    Make a lifestyle change and start saving money.

Teach your children to put half their allowance into a savings account and make decisions about spending the balance.

Here are a few other money saving ideas:

- pack lunches and save dinner for special reasons

- remind household members to turn lights off

- arrange a "by name" gift exchange at the holidays to limit spending

- use coupons and watch for bargains

- hit the consignment shop for clothing and household bargains

- don't go shopping for shopping sake

- do research when making expensive purchases

- don't try to keep up with the "Joneses"

- aim to pay cash and not use credit cards for purchases

 Energy Optimization

Energy optimization efforts in our community are on the rise, and Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency (OLHSA) is leading the way. Thanks to progressive state legislation last year, retail utility companies like DTE Energy are now required to give back to their consumers in the form of the Energy Optimization Program, and OLHSA is the local facilitator of this vital program.
The Energy Optimization Program, mandated by state government and provided by Community Action Agencies across Michigan, reduces energy consumption by helping to provide energy efficient home improvements. These improvements include CFL light bulbs, Energy Star refrigerators, insulation, programmable thermostats, air sealing, high efficiency furnaces, and high efficiency water heaters. If a resident is at or below 200 percent of the poverty level, they may be able to benefit from some or all of these improvements.
